  • Contingency Plan for Returning to School for the 2020-2021 School Year

The Pontotoc City School District has established a re-entry team of district and school level administrators, support staff and medical advisors. The team recently met to discuss the re-entry options that would maintain learning with the safety of students as the main priority. Another meeting will take place in July to finalize the plan and allow families time to plan accordingly. Please understand that the following statement is important moving forward:

This plan is being established based on CDC considerations as they are established at this moment in time. Based on the nature of the COVID-19 Pandemic, guidance may change for better or worse. The public will be kept posted as information/guidance is given to the district.

The Pontotoc City School District should open on August 7, 2020 as originally planned and approved by the School Board of Trustees. Under the proposed Contingency Plan, PCSD could open in one of the following ways:

    1. Traditional School Model: Open schools as traditionally as possible adhering to the CDC considerations.

    2. Blended School Model: (parent choice) Traditional learning Monday-Thursday for students that choose to attend face-to-face, and virtual classes for students that cannot attend in person. Friday will be virtual school for everyone, using devices issued by the school. Virtual students would attend school Friday to take proctored exams and receive face-to-face support from teachers.

    3. Virtual School Model: (only if a shutdown is required by the Governor or other government agency) All students attending virtual school with devices issued by the district.

Parents/Guardians will have the opportunity to receive training with devices and online learning once the 2020-2021 School Model has been selected and approved by the Board of Trustees. The final decision will be based upon surveys completed by parents/guardians, CDC recommendations and considerations of the Re-entry team.

The district has received Elementary Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds provided by the CARES Act in response to COVID-19. These allocations will be used to provide accessible technology to all students, sanitation and safety supplies for faculty and students, and additional student support through additional employees.

  • Parents Urged to Make Appointments Now for Back-to-School Immunizations

Today the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) is urging parents to act now and schedule their child’s age-appropriate immunizations before summer is over. Mississippi state law requires children to be immunized against childhood diseases to enter public or private school, Head Start or daycare.

Make an appointment at your county health department clinic to bring your child in for their immunizations. A list of county health department locations along with times and days the clinics are open can be found at www.HealthyMS.com/locations.

Parents should bring the child’s social security card and insurance card if available. Parents and children over 2 must wear a mask when entering the county health department clinic.

For more information on immunizations, visit www.HealthyMS.com/immunizations.

Follow MSDH by e-mail and social media at HealthyMS.com/connect.

  • Digital Learning Readiness Survey

As school closures continue and as the state develops plans to direct resources to the areas of greatest need, the Mississippi Department of Education is asking each family in the Pontotoc City School District, to complete this brief survey. This data will be shared with State Representatives and the Governor to determine the greatest areas of need.

The survey questions address ability of families to connect their children to digital learning offerings from their school through the internet.

Please follow this link to complete the survey: https://cspr.mde.k12.ms.us/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=mlK09726#

  • Senior Ad in Yearbook

Use an ad to congratulate your graduating senior for his/her achievement during the school year. An ad in the yearbook allows you to recognize him/her with photos and words. While the yearbook lets your kid remember all the special people and events from the school year, the personal touch of an ad will make the book that much more special for them. Senior ads are available in a variety of sizes and prices. See the form at the end of this newsletter for the sizes offered. Bring photos and text with order form and payment to the front office or send with your student to Mrs. Gersh, the yearbook adviser. The deadline for senior ads is Monday, December 2. Contact Mrs. Gersh and the yearbook staff at hgersh@pontotoc.k12.ms.us with any questions.
