Pontotoc High School News

(2/19) Last fall, PHS students were encouraged to participate in the MS Poetry Project. The theme this year was "Writing About Nature: A Place I Love (or, A Place I Hate)." Nine students were chosen as school winners, and their poems were submitted for the state competition. Kaylee Good was recently announced as a first place statewide winner! She will be honored at special events at the MS Book Festival in Jackson this September.

All school-wide K-12 winners will have their poems printed in an anthology, published later this spring. Each student and school will receive a copy of the book.

Congratulations to Kaylee, our school winners, and all the PHS poets who participated this year!

(2/18) This week, PHS juniors dedicated time on Tuesday and Wednesday to prepare for the ACT. Students rotated through small-group sessions, where they focused on test-taking strategies and received targeted instruction for the English, Reading, and Math sections. Our juniors did a great job asking questions, taking notes, and actively participating in each lesson.

All juniors will take the ACT on Tuesday, February 24 at PHS.

(2/17) Congratulations to PHS Senior Rylen Mounce for representing PHS in Secretary of State Michael Watson's Student Ambassador Program this school year. This is a program between high school seniors, the Secretary of State's Office, and Secretary of State Michael Watson. Through the program, students have regular interactions with leaders from the Secretary of State's Office, Mississippi Legislature, and various other state and local officials. Students who complete the program receive a first-hand account of state government in action, establish a network of like-minded peers from across the state, and experience the processes that ensure Mississippi is a better place for their generation and generations to come.

(2/11) On Tuesday, PHS ninth graders were welcomed at the Pontotoc Ridge Career and Technology Center to learn about the CTE courses offered there. Student ambassadors led tours throughout the campus, and students received a quick preview of the course from the instructors and current students. The students appreciated learning more about their options in different course pathways.

(2/11) The Pontotoc High School and Pontotoc Junior High Choir sang the National Anthem at the Memphis Hustle basketball game last Friday night. Thank you to Mr. Adams for leading the students and giving them this experience! Way to go, choir!

(2/10) PHS senior, Uzzy Martinez, is one of 8 students selected from among 33 high school applicants to take part in the Toyota Creating Your Future Internship Program for Spring 2026. He will be participating in a paid internship while earning his Manufacturing Skills Basic Certification through ICC and job shadowing in the paint, body weld, stamping and assembly departments at Toyota MS.

Uzzy is shown at the Toyota Internship Kickoff Event at the Toyota Experience Center, where he took part in a program signing. Thank you, Toyota, for this special student opportunity!

(2/3) The Virtual Imagine the Possibilities Career Expo contest has ended for the 2025-2026 school year.  PHS Sophomores were involved in this special career exploration event/contest from October 1, 2025 through January 31, 2026.

(2/2) PHS Senior and Northeast Mississippi Youth Foundation Member, Kyleigh Conner, represented PHS at the Ignite Leadership Conference in Tupelo. She, along with other NEMYF members, had the opportunity to listen to several dynamic, motivational speakers and also meet with former Blue Angel, John Foley, to learn about the culture of excellence which exists among the U.S. Navy's elite Blue Angels squadron.

(2/2) National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. We appreciate all the ways PHS counselors, Kelli Warren and Penny Kidd, support our students!

Pontotoc City School District will be remain closed Friday, January 30 due to power outages and other issues from inclement weather.
